For Dental Patients in Port Charlotte, FL

What Happens at Regular Dental Visits

Routine dental visits are important to maintain a patient’s oral health. Visiting the dentist regularly can potentially prevent future dental problems and the need for complex care over time. When you visit our office, you can expect:

Consultation

If you are visiting us because of a dental concern, you will immediately consult us so we can fully examine your smile and determine the right treatment for your needs. You may also ask us any questions about your treatment options or accommodations.

Dental X-rays

While we may not require X-rays at every dental visit, we will recommend routine X-rays so we can keep track of your oral health. We use digital panoramic X-rays to see the upper and lower teeth and the jaw. Using these X-rays, we can note developing dental problems and plan treatments depending on our findings.

Dental Cleaning

A dental cleaning is one of the most important preventative treatments we offer at routine visits. During a cleaning, we scale the teeth to remove bacterial buildup, brush the teeth and gums, floss, and then rinse the mouth. Then, we can apply a fluoride treatment to strengthen your tooth enamel and fight demineralization.

Dental Screening

We screen for dental problems at regular visits, including cavities and oral cancer. When looking for cavities, we look for areas of pain and sensitivity, holes in teeth, and tooth discoloration. We will also look for red and white patches in the mouth and chronic mouth sores, common signs of oral cancer. If we discover these problems, we will plan the next steps in treatment.

New patients are welcome to our office. If you are visiting us for the first time, contact us so we can receive records and X-rays from your previous dental providers. We will also ask new patients to complete the general dental release form to release records to our office.

Let us know if you are taking any medications or have medical conditions that may impact your care and if you require any accommodations. We want to ensure your comfort when you visit our office, whether it’s your first or fortieth visit.

How often should I visit the dentist?

We recommend biannual dental visits or visits every six months. Visiting the dentist frequently allows us to understand your current dental problems and plan the appropriate treatment. Even if you do not have a dental problem, a thorough cleaning will keep harmful bacteria at bay and ensure your teeth and gums are healthy. We can also provide tips to improve your at-home oral hygiene routine.

Why Is Dental Care Important As You Age?

It’s important to visit the dentist at every age. However, seniors may develop dental problems due to aggressive brushing, medical conditions, medications, or wear over time.

Common problems patients can experience as they age include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Cavities
  • Missing teeth
  • Gum disease
  • Mouth sores

We offer full services for patients with these problems and will recommend smile makeovers or full mouth reconstructions if patients require treatment for multiple dental issues.
